Planning a trip with your pet
There was a time when a family vacation in India meant leaving your four-legged companion behind. That is changing fast — more airlines, trains, hotels and cafes are pet-friendly than ever before. But "pet-friendly" does not mean "stress-free." A little planning makes the difference between a fun trip and a miserable one for your pet.
By road
Car travel is the easiest way to travel with a pet in India, and usually the least stressful for them.
- Use a secured crate or a well-fitted harness attached to a seatbelt clip — never let a dog ride loose in the front seat.
- Stop every 2 to 3 hours for a water break and a short walk.
- Feed a light meal 3 to 4 hours before departure, not right before you leave, to avoid motion sickness.
- Never leave a pet alone in a parked car, even for a few minutes — cabin temperatures in India climb dangerously fast.
By train
Indian Railways allows small pets in some classes with advance arrangements, and larger dogs typically need to travel in the brake van/luggage compartment with a booked ticket. Rules vary by train and zone, so always confirm directly with the railway booking office before you travel, and carry your pet's vaccination certificate.
By air
Most Indian carriers allow small pets (usually under 7-8 kg including the carrier) in the cabin, with larger dogs travelling as manifest cargo in a pressurised, temperature-controlled hold. If you are flying:
- Book your pet's spot as early as possible — airlines cap the number of animals per flight.
- Acclimatise your pet to their travel crate at home for a couple of weeks beforehand.
- Avoid feeding a full meal within 4 hours of the flight.
- Attach an ID tag with your mobile number directly to the crate, not just the collar.
When boarding is the better choice
Not every trip is right for a pet — long work travel, destinations without pet-friendly stays, or a pet that gets highly anxious in transit are all good reasons to consider boarding instead.
