A growing pet-owning city
Mumbai and its neighbouring cities have seen a sharp rise in pet ownership over the last few years — and with it, a bigger conversation about responsible care, public hygiene, and coexistence with the city's large community-dog population.
What responsible pet ownership looks like
- Registration and vaccination: keep rabies and core vaccinations current, and retain certificates — many housing societies and boarding/grooming facilities will ask for them.
- Leashing in public spaces: use a leash in common areas, lifts and building compounds, both for your pet's safety and to keep shared spaces comfortable for neighbours who may be nervous around animals.
- Waste management: always carry poop bags on walks — civic cleanliness rules are increasingly enforced in housing societies and public parks.
- Noise and balcony safety: secure balconies and grilles, and be mindful of excessive barking in dense housing.
Community (stray) animals
Mumbai is also home to a large population of community dogs and cats. Current municipal and Animal Welfare Board of India guidance generally supports the ABC (Animal Birth Control) approach — sterilisation and vaccination rather than relocation — since relocating community animals disrupts territory and rabies-vaccination coverage.
If you feed community animals near your building, a few courtesies help keep the peace with neighbours: feed at a fixed time and spot away from walkways, clean up after, and support local sterilisation drives where you can.
Reporting abuse or concerns
If you witness animal cruelty or a stray in distress, document it and report it to your local municipal animal welfare helpline or a registered NGO promptly — most cities now have dedicated animal helpline numbers for exactly this.
