Two very different kinds of "find my pet"
At Gravity Pets Home, we understand that nothing matters more to a pet parent than knowing their pet is safe and can be brought home quickly if they ever go missing. Two popular tools solve this in very different ways: QR code tags and GPS trackers.
QR code dog tags
A QR tag is a small, lightweight tag attached to the collar. Anyone who finds your pet scans the code with a phone camera — no app required — and instantly sees your contact details and, on many services, your pet's medical notes.
Pros: inexpensive, no battery or subscription, works anywhere with zero setup, extremely lightweight for small pets.
Cons: only useful if someone finds your pet and scans it — it does not tell you where your pet currently is.
GPS trackers
A GPS tracker is a small electronic device on the collar that reports live location to an app on your phone, often with geofencing alerts if your pet leaves a set area.
Pros: real-time location, geofencing alerts, useful the moment a pet slips out, great for outdoor/adventure pets.
Cons: needs regular charging, ongoing data/subscription cost, heavier and bulkier — not ideal for small breeds or cats, and signal can be patchy indoors or in basements.
So which one should you choose?
They are not really competitors — they solve different halves of the same problem:
- Choose a QR tag if you want an always-on, zero-maintenance safety net so a stranger can reach you the moment they find your pet.
- Choose a GPS tracker if your pet spends a lot of time off-leash outdoors and you want to know their location before someone else even finds them.
- Best of both worlds: many pet parents now use both — a QR tag as the low-effort backup, and a GPS tracker for active, off-leash pets.
Whichever you choose, keep the contact details linked to the tag up to date, and make sure the collar itself fits securely — the best safety tech in the world does not help if it slips off.
