The rainy season is not all cosy window views
For pet parents, the monsoon brings a specific set of challenges: damp fur that never quite dries, muddy paws, a spike in ticks and fleas, and stomach upsets from puddle-drinking. A few consistent habits go a long way.
Coat and paw care
- Towel-dry your pet fully after every walk, paying extra attention to paws, ears and belly — damp fur trapped against skin is the number one cause of monsoon fungal and bacterial infections.
- Trim the fur around paws slightly shorter during monsoon so mud and water do not cling as much.
- Check between the toes daily for redness, odour or ticks.
Walk timing and routes
- Walk between showers rather than during heavy rain, and avoid waterlogged routes where sewage overflow is common.
- Keep a dedicated "monsoon towel" and a pet-safe antiseptic wipe near the door for a quick wipe-down before your pet settles onto furniture or bedding.
Food and water
- Stick to freshly prepared, easily digestible meals — humidity spoils food faster, so do not leave wet food out for long.
- Always offer clean drinking water at home so your pet is less tempted to drink from puddles, which is a common source of infections during monsoon.
Fleas, ticks and mosquitoes
Monsoon humidity is peak breeding season for fleas and ticks, and mosquito-borne concerns rise too. Keep flea/tick preventives up to date, and ask your vet about heartworm prevention if you are not already on a routine.
Watch for these warning signs
Lethargy, loss of appetite, persistent scratching, a musty smell from the ears or paws, or loose stools are all reasons to see a vet promptly — monsoon infections progress faster in the humidity.
Boarding during monsoon
